Time factor cost Keshi Equatorial Guinea job

Despite failing to qualify Nigeria to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Stephen Keshi could have put up an appearance as well at the competition with the host team Equatorial Guinea.
However, the former defender turned down the offer when he was approached by the football federation of the central African country, because it was already too late to do any meaningful work before the tournament.
“I travelled to Malabo in December to discuss a contract of two years to take effect after the 2015 Afcon,” Keshi told Paris-based pan-African magazine Jeune Afrique.
“Few days ago, the football federation contacted me to ask of I was still interested in the job. But with about 10 days to the tournament, I felt time was too short to do any good work. I don’t know the team or the players,” he said.
Keshi said although the financial proposal was interesting, he had to weigh the risk in case of a flop which could affect his career.
“You need a minimum of one month to prepare for a tournament like the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.
The contract of the Nzalang Nacional former coach Andoni Goicoetxea expired in December and was not renewed.
Esteban Becker from Argentina, who led the Equatorial Guinea women’s team to continental triumph in 2012, has been appointed as Goicoetxea successor.
