Rwanda, Tanzania share spoils

Tanzania’s U-23 national football team came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw against their Rwandan counterparts in a friendly match played on Thursday at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza.
Midfielder Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza netted a spectacular header in the eighth minute from a well taken corner kick by Patrick Sibomana to give Rwanda an early lead against the Taifa Stars.
Rwanda dominated play in the first period but a lapse in concentration saw them lose possession in midfield and a swift counterattack by Tanzania granted Kelvin Friday an equaliser for the hosts.
“It was a fair result but we are disappointed not to win,” said Rwanda interim coach Lee Johnson, adding, “We played so well in the first half but credit to them.
“We were unlucky to concede in the 44th minute but we were punished for lack of concentration.”
Johnson added: “It was a game of two halves. In the second half, they changed the system and put us under immense pressure and forced us to change our system to accommodate theirs.”
The Englishman, who was in charge of the national side for the first time following Stephen Constantine’s resignation a week ago, commended the players for their desire, courage and heart.
He said: “We played together as a team and this game was a good learning experience for the younger players.
“We need more opportunities to play more games because that is what we need to get ourselves in the right shape ahead of the African Nations Championship (Chan) next year.”
This is the first of several friendly games as Rwanda prepares for the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier against Somalia in March as well as Chan that will be hosed in Rwanda in January 2016.
