Al Ahly too strong for APR

Emad Mohamed netted a brace as Al Ahly defeated Rwandan champions APR 2-0 in the first leg of their first round encounter in the Caf Champions League at Amahoro Stadium on Saturday.
APR lost possession in the middle, allowing unmarked Mohamed to cut inside before sending in a rasping shot off the woodwork for Al Ahly's 67th minute lead.
The home side had earlier squandered an opportunity to take the lead when Michel Ndahinduka made a run on the right flank, and could have sent a clear pass to the unmarked Bernabe Mubumbyi but chose other fruitless options.
In the 84th minute, Mohamed was once again left unmarked in the penalty box and this time he beat goalkeeper Olivier Kwizera, who had stepped up on a one-on-one face-off to send his and Al Ahly’s second goal into an open net.
Al Ahly head coach Juan Carlos Garrido was pleased with the display. “I am very impressed with our performance because we scored two goals at the right time. We did not play well in the first half but we recovered in the second because they made two mistakes and we scored. APR is a good team but finally we managed to win.”
A disappointed APR interim coach Vincent Mashami blamed the loss on his side’s complacency that resulted the first goal when they lost possession unnecessarily.
Earlier, in the 14th minute, striker Michel Ndahinduka was brought down in the penalty box but Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe instead awarded a direct freekick when the hosts were sure it should have been a penalty.
Defender Emery Bayisenge;s shot from the free kick was cleared by the Al Ahly wall and another opportunity for the home side came in the 41st minute but Al Ahly custodian Sherif Ekramy was defiant. The return leg will be played on the weekend of April 3-5 in Egypt.
