Sunderland U17s set for Gauteng Cup

Sunderland’s Under-17 team are set to fly out to South Africa later this month to compete in the Future Champion’s Gauteng Cup for the second year running.
The competition is highly regarded as one of the most competitive youth tournaments in world football, with a number of teams from across the globe competing to win the coveted trophy.
Sunderland, who are enjoying an ever-growing profile on the African continent as part of the SAFC in Africa initiative, were honoured to take part in the Future Champions competition last year, and hope to build on their seventh finishing position last time round, having gained a lot of experience from their first visit.
Elliott Dickman, head of coaching at Sunderland’s Academy, said: “Last year’s tournament was a great experience for the players, as they were able to test their skills against some of the finest players in their age range from across the globe. We are looking to build on that experience this year and we are confident of a successful visit.
“Sunderland has a phenomenal following in South Africa and we can’t wait to represent the club at this prestigious tournament.”
This year’s tournament will be an extra special occasion as Sunderland’s football club partners, Asante Kotoko in Ghana, will also participate in the prestigious youth tournament.
The 2015 Future Champions Gauteng Cup kicks off on Monday, March 23, with the official group stage draw taking place on Wednesday March 18.
