Wits beat Sundowns to go second

Bidvest Wits beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 to close the gap on Absa Premiership log leaders Kaizer Chiefs to seven points at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday night.
A second-half goal by Sibusiso Vilakazi deservedly gave the hosts the three points to move them to the No 2 spot on the table with 40 points, while Sundowns dropped to third place with 37 points.
The Clever Boys were the better side and dominated possession in the visitors’ half, however, they failed to capitalise on the chances they created in the first stanza.
In the first minute, Gavin Hunt’s men moved forward with purpose as Vilakazi delivered a beautiful cross from the right but goalkeeper Denis Onyango collected with ease.
When the game approached the half-hour mark, Thulani Hlatshwayo blocked Cuthbert Malajila’s attempt in a one on one situation which resulted from a pin-point pass from Teko Modise.
Pitso Mosimane’s men followed up with a cross from Siyanda Zwane in search of Malajila, but Moeneeb Josephs safely held on.
Although the visitors defended too deep and allowed the hosts to come at them, it was Kees Kwakman in the 40th minute who had a brilliant opportunity to put the Braamfontein side ahead. He received a pass from the right unmarked at the far post, but his shot went over the target.
The first half ended 0-0.
Hunt’s men continued where they left off after the break by keeping the visitors on the backfoot.
In the 62nd minute, Malajila wasted a chance when Buhle Mkhwanazi tried a back pass to Josephs and it landed in his path but he couldn’t beat Josephs.
In the 76th minute, Wits broke the deadlock when man of the match Vilakazi made his way into the box, beating Ramahlwe Mphahlele with his skill before slotting past the oncoming Onyango.
Three minutes later, Hlompho Kekana tried his trademark long range effort but fired a low hard shot and Josephs collected.
With under a minute to go, the Brazilians tried all they could and pushed captain Alje Schut to play upfront.
Substitute Anthony Laffor’s header hit the woodwork in the dying minutes, allowing Wits to take the spoils with a 1-0 victory.
