Mali coach going home disappointed

Mali will not progress to the final of the 2015 African U-20 Championship after they were knocked out by host nation Senegal in the semi-final on Thursday in Dakar.
However, the junior Eagles still have the chance to win a medal, as they lock horns with Ghana in the third place match on Saturday. But coach Fanyeri Diarra is not enthusiastic. To him it is all over for Mali.
“My objective was not to win the third place match but the trophy. We’ve been working very hard and our hopes were high. But it’s all over. I’m very disappointed going home without the cup,” Diarra said.
“I don’t have to blame my players. They did their best, but the final result did not favour us. We had lots of chances but couldn’t convert them.”
The coach refused to comment on his team’s goal which was disallowed by the referee to avoid tensions, according him. Senegal coach also declined to offer a word on the referee’s decision which many pundits believe was wrong.
Mali are the surprise package of the tournament. They won all three group matches, claiming the highest point, nine, from the group stage.
They will meet Ghana in the third place match on Saturday in Dakar. Both teams faced-off in Group B final match day, with the Eagles winning 1-0.
