The Scottish Professional Football League has decided to go back on its decision to change the timing of Rangers' final-day match against promotion rivals Hearts by announcing on Thursday that the match will take place on Saturday, May 2.
League officials came under fire on Wednesday for announcing that the match would take place at Tynecastle on May 3 because satellite broadcaster Sky wanted to screen the fixture live.
However, this prompted an angry reaction from Hibernian, Rangers' rivals for a play-off place that could lead to a return to the elite Scottish Premiership.
Hibs argued it would damage the integrity of the second-tier Championship as it would mean fallen Glasgow giants Rangers knew exactly what they had to do in order to secure second place given the Edinburgh club were playing Falkirk 24 hours earlier on Saturday, May 2.
But now the Rangers match will revert back to its original date, with all Championship fixtures on Saturday, May 2 kicking off at 12:15pm local time.
"Following consultation between the SPFL, member clubs and broadcast partners regarding the final round of Championship fixtures over the weekend of May 2 and 3, Sky Sports has now suggested an alternative schedule for its televised Championship match that weekend," a league spokesman said Thursday.
"As a result, we are pleased to confirm all five Championship matches that weekend will now kick-off simultaneously at 12.15pm on Saturday, May 2. The Hearts v Rangers match will be televised live on Sky Sports."
Hearts currently top the table by 23 points from second-placed Edinburgh rivals Hibernian, who lead third-placed Rangers on goal difference alone, with all three clubs, once mainstays of the Scottish top flight, looking to return to the Premiership.
