Tochukwu “Simmy” Nwankwo scored a brace on Sunday but it proved purely academic as Gil Vicente lost 2-3 loss to Club Desportivo Nacional on match day 28 of the Primeira Liga.
The Nigerian was deemed only good enough for a place on the bench by the club’s trainer, José Mota, who elected to start Vítor Gonçalves Avtandil Ebralidze instead.
At half time, Gil Vicente were trailing 0-1 and Mota did the needful, throwing the Nigerian into the fray at the start of the second half in place of Joao Vilela.
It proved to be an inspired move as the forward hit the ground running.
Simmy did not disappoint as he took just four minutes to justify the confidence reposed in him by levelling the scores with a sweet finish.
He completed his brace with a quarter of an hour remaining but the hosts were to have the last laugh in front of 2,000 fans at Estádio da Madeira when Marco Matias netted the winner with just nine minutes left on the clock.
Simmy has been prolific in front of goal this season, scoring nine times in the league for the Gillistas.
The 22-year-old’s solitary goal in the Cup (against Atlético Club do Portugal on September 24, 2014) also means he is up to double figures this term.
